The verb handfast is defined, "to formally promise, to make a contract." An ancient Celtic tradition, handfasting has been practiced as a symbolic joining of two individuals as they make a promise together in marriage.
The couple joins hands as cords, ribbon, or cloth are wrapped, "binding" the two together in love. While this tradition originally served the purpose of the now-common exchange of rings, you may choose to have a handfasting ritual incorporated into your wedding ceremony in addition to your ring exchange. The binding material(s) you choose can have symbolic or sentimental meaning in their origin, prior use, color, etc.
There are a number of traditional handfasting blessings, but you can choose any music, blessing, or reading to accompany this ritual based on your personal preference.
